Mail blacklist check

Type an IPv4 address or a domain: we check its mail servers' addresses on public email blacklists and show the reason and the removal link.

What is a mail blacklist (DNSBL)?

Lists of IP addresses that have sent spam or harmful mail. Mail servers ask them about every message they receive: if the sender's address is on a list, they may refuse the message or put it in the spam folder.

When you type a domain, we look up its mail servers (MX records) and the domain's own address (A record), then ask every list about each of these addresses. When you type an address, we check that one only.

Why does an address get listed?

The most common causes: an infected device or website sending mail without your knowledge, a stolen mail password, an open relay that accepts mail from anyone, or bulk mail to old or bought addresses that hits the lists' spam traps.

An address can also be listed because of a neighbour: on shared hosting many sites send from the same address. Missing settings hurt too: an address without a reverse name (PTR) or a domain without SPF looks untrustworthy to many servers.

My address is listed. What now?

Fix the cause first: check devices and websites, change mail passwords, stop any bulk sending, and make sure PTR, SPF, DKIM and DMARC are in place. If you ask for removal before that, the address is soon listed again, and some lists refuse a second request.

Then open the "Request removal" link next to the list and follow its steps. Many lists drop an address on their own a few days after the spam stops. If the address belongs to a hosting server you do not own, send the result to your hosting provider.

Which lists do we check?

Only lists whose terms allow free use by a public tool like this one, such as SpamCop, PSBL, UCEPROTECT and DroneBL. When a list does not answer we say "Could not check", never "Listed".

We do not show Spamhaus: its free use does not cover public lookup tools. Check your address there directly at check.spamhaus.org.

Frequently asked questions

My address is not listed, but my mail still lands in spam. Why?

Blacklists are only one reason. Check your domain's SPF, DKIM and DMARC records, the content of the messages, and the domain's reputation at Gmail and Outlook.

Can I check an IPv6 address?

Not yet: most blacklists work with IPv4 only. Type the domain name or the IPv4 address of the mail server.

What does "Could not check" mean?

The list did not answer in time or returned an error code. It does not mean the address is listed. Try again in a few minutes.

How long does removal take?

It depends on the list: some remove the address right after the request, others on their own a day to a week after the spam stops.

Do you keep the addresses and domains I check?

No. We send the address only to the lists shown in the table, and keep the result in memory for five minutes before it is dropped.
