WHOIS lookup: who owns a domain?

Type a domain name to see who registered it, when it expires and where it is managed - and if it is free, register it right away.

What are WHOIS and RDAP?

WHOIS is the public record of domain names: it says whether a name is registered, with which registrar, when it was registered and when it expires, and which name servers run it.

RDAP is the modern successor of WHOIS: the same information in a structured form over a secure connection. Our tool asks each extension's registry directly over RDAP, so you see the data as the registry itself publishes it.

How to read the result

The registrar is the company the domain was registered through; it is where you go to renew, transfer or report abuse. “Expires” is the last day the domain works unless it is renewed.

Name servers decide where the website and e-mail are managed. The status explains the locks: “transfer locked”, for example, is a normal protection against moving the domain without its owner's consent.

Many registries hide the owner's name and e-mail for privacy; you then see “hidden by the registry” instead.

Syrian .sy domains

The Syrian registry NIC.sy offers no WHOIS, only RDAP. That is why most WHOIS tools show nothing for Syrian domains, and this one does: .sy, .com.sy, .org.sy, .سورية and the other Syrian extensions.

The Syrian registry hides the owner's address, phone and e-mail, and shows the name, country and the registrar. Horanos is an accredited .sy registrar: if the name is free, you can register it right here.

Frequently asked questions

Is the tool free?

Yes, free and without an account. We do not keep the names you look up.

Why can't I see the owner's name?

Most registries hide the data of private persons. We show only what the registry publishes and mark what it hid as “hidden by the registry”.

The domain I want is taken. What now?

Pick one of the similar free names we suggest under the result, or another extension for the same name. If the domain is yours and registered elsewhere, you can transfer it to us.

The result says “not registered”. Can I have it?

If the button “Register this domain” shows, it is free with us right now at the price shown. Availability is for the moment of the lookup; someone else may take it.

What does “expires” mean?

The last day the domain works unless it is renewed. After that the website and e-mail stop, and later the name may become free for anyone.

Why did the tool say “could not check”?

Some registries limit the number of questions or answer slowly. Try again in a minute.
