Glossary
Hosting and domain terms, simply
- Domain
- Your site's name on the internet, such as horanos.com. You register it for a year or more and renew it to keep it.
- Search for a domain
- Domain extension (TLD)
- The last part of a domain after the dot, such as .com, .net or .sy. Each extension has its own rules and price.
- Extension prices
- Syrian .sy domain
- Syria's official extension. It is registered through an accredited registrar and needs a form and papers.
- Syrian domains
- Subdomain
- A name in front of your domain, such as shop.example.com. Use it for a separate part of your site without registering a new domain.
- DNS
- The internet's directory: it turns a domain name into a server address, so browsers find your site and mail finds your mailbox.
- Check your domain's DNS
- Name servers
- The servers that hold your domain's DNS records. Changing them moves the domain's management elsewhere and can take a while to spread.
- How to change name servers
- A record
- A DNS record that points the domain to the IP address of the server that hosts the site.
- MX record
- A DNS record that tells the world where to deliver your domain's e-mail. A mistake in it means messages do not arrive.
- Check your domain's mail
- SPF
- A record listing the servers allowed to send mail for your domain, so your messages stay out of spam and nobody spoofs your address.
- DKIM
- A digital signature added to every message from your domain, proving to the receiver that it is yours and unchanged on the way.
- DMARC
- A record telling mail servers what to do with a message in your domain's name that fails SPF or DKIM: accept, quarantine or reject it.
- SSL certificate
- A certificate that encrypts the connection between visitors and your site, so the browser shows the padlock and the address starts with https.
- Check your site's certificate
- HTTPS
- The encrypted connection to a site. Browsers warn visitors about sites without it, and Google prefers it in results.
- DV, OV and EV
- The validation levels of SSL certificates: DV checks domain ownership only, OV the company too, and EV checks the company most deeply.
- Compare SSL certificates
- Transfer code (EPP or Auth Code)
- A password for the domain from your current provider. It proves you own the domain when you move it to another provider.
- How to transfer your domain
- Transfer lock
- A protection on the domain that stops it moving without your permission. Remove it at your current provider before starting a transfer.
- WHOIS
- A public record of a domain's details: the registrar, the registration and expiry dates, and the name servers.
- Web hosting
- Space on a server that is always online, holding your site's files, its database and its e-mail.
- Compare hosting plans
- LiteSpeed
- A fast web server that serves WordPress sites especially quickly, with built-in caching.
- NVMe SSD
- Storage much faster than traditional disks, so your pages and database respond faster.
- Backup
- A copy of your site's files and database that you restore when something breaks or is deleted by mistake.
- Uptime
- The share of time a site works without stopping over a period. The closer to 100%, the better.
- Our service status
- TTL
- How long devices keep a DNS record before asking again. This is why a DNS change takes a while to show.
